Linux Folder Structure

Just notes for some usually-using folders.

Folders

/bin: Executables

/boot: Static files for boot loaders

/dev: Device files

/dev/null: Send to blackhole

/dev/zero: Infinite 0

Usage:

  1. Create a large file
terminal
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=dummy bs=1MB count=100
100+0 records in
100+0 records out
100000000 bytes (100 MB, 95 MiB) copied, 0.0264044 s, 3.8 GB/s
  1. Format disk

/dev/random: Infinite random values

/etc: Config files

/home: Directories for users

/opt: Optional packages

/srv: Service data

/usr: Sharable, read-only data

/var: Files what changes

/var/log: Log files

/var/lib: State info (ex: redis dump)
